ダンサーで、振付師（コリオグラファー）の知人から、「Keep the channel open」という素敵な言葉を教えていただきました。
モダンダンスの開拓者の1人と言われているアメリカのダンサー、コリオグラファーのマーサ・グラハム（マーサ・グレアム／Martha Graham／1894〜1991年）の言葉です。
人には将来、活力、生命力、エネルギー、そして輝きがある。それらはあなたを通じ、表現として世界に出る。そして、あなたは後にも先にも唯一の存在。
だからこそ、あなたの表現は、かけがえのないもの。あなたがそれをブロックしてしまったら表現の場を失い、消失してしまうわ。あなただけじゃない。「世界」が失うの。あなたのやったことを良いとか悪いとか、価値があるとかないとか評価したり、だれかほかの人と比較したりすることなど、あなたの知ったこっちゃないし、やるべきことじゃない。わかる？ あなたが気にしなければならないのは、透明になる、つまり、遠慮せず自分をすべてさらけ出すこと。たましいも心も身体もすべてまるごと世界に向けてオープンに開くこと。それさえすれば、アグネス、あなたは自分自身や自分の仕事さえ信じる必要はないの。大切なのはオープンであること。自分の内側に燃える炎に気づいて。世界と交信するすべてのチャンネルを全開に。･･･（略）･･･
「いつだって、何だって、満足なんて、ないのよ！」マーサは熱くなって叫んだ。
「そこにあるのは奇妙で、神聖な不満足、そして神の祝福を受けた不安（blessed unrest）。それがあるからこそ、私たちを前進させ、より生き生きとさせてくれるの。･･･（略）･･･」*1）
“There is a vitality, a life-force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. (…)

この言葉は、マーサ・グラハムが、友人の振付師であるアグネス・デ・ミル（Agnes de Mille／1905〜1993年）にかけた励ましの言葉だということです。
